A new year usually means that people start to hit up the gym, eat healthier, and strive to keep their resolutions. One popular resolution is that of getting rid of stress and clutter in our homes. With the often-hectic pace we keep between work, family and other obligations, our homes tend to fall back on our list of priorities some days. Let’s look at the top 5 ways to keep your house, condo or cottage as Zen-like and stress-free as possible so it can be the relaxing oasis you deserve.

1. Declutter

Marie Kondo took the world by storm this past year with her successful home organizational skills and strategies. One key take-away we learned was that if an item around your home doesn’t ‘spark joy’, it needs to go, and yes…even if it’s sentimental. The best way to tackle any purging process is to go through each drawer, closet, box and surface, one room at a time and make firm decisions about what you should keep. Remember, clutter adds to our stress levels! Before you throw anything in the garbage, be sure it can’t be donated, sold or recycled first. There are numerous charities and thrift shops in our region that can gladly take unwanted or unused items off your hands.

2. A place for everything

Once you’ve purged your home of that clutter, you’re going to need organizational systems. For example, if you have a kitchen counter that’s always piled up with papers, chargers and random items, there are storage solutions for that. Make sure there’s a designated place for everything, carefully labelled in convenient spaces so that the whole family knows where things go. If you’re not sure where to start, there are storage solutions stores to shop at, or hop online; Pinterest has amazing ideas that will cure your clutter problems for good.

3. Clean

While it’s not always easy to keep a house clean 24/7 (especially busy families with kids and pets), it does help relieve stress when a home feels fresh and tidy. When we tackle our housework, it often helps alleviate tension, while making it look fabulous at the same time. The key is to stay on top of those chores so they don’t become overwhelming. Recruit the entire family to help out daily, and if time is too hard to come by, you may want to consider professional cleaning services. There are also several options for ‘robot’ vacuums and mops that can at least do your floors for you!

4. Adjust your décor

If your goal this year is to reduce stress, take a look around your house and see if your home décor is as soothing as you’d like it to be. Do you have proper lighting? Do your window treatments need updating? Have you added soft, warm colours, calming houseplants and nature-inspired themes? If a room doesn’t incite calm, even a few minor changes such as cozy blankets, soft cushions, inspiring art and some scented candles can make a welcome difference.

5. Have a ‘me space’

While man-caves and she-sheds may have been trending the past few years, what’s more important is that you have a space in your home where you can go to relax. This can be a sunny corner in the living room with a plush chair and a lamp for reading, a shady spot in the yard with your favourite things, or a nook in your bedroom or den where you can do some yoga, listen to podcasts, or simply go to unwind.

Our home isn’t just a roof over our heads and a space for our family and stuff, it’s a haven…a refuge from the rest of the busy world. That’s why it’s important to invest some time and energy to get it just the way you need it so that’s it’s the calming, stress-free space you need. Also, if you’re thinking of selling your home in the future, having a decluttered and organized house will do wonders to impress potential buyers.
