Need A Vacation? How About A Staycation?

Whether this long winter has gotten you down, or you’re feeling run down, a vacation is just what you need. What can you do though if there’s not quite enough money in the budget or you can’t manage that time away from work? This calls for a stay-cation! It’s a wonderful way to regroup, recharge and relax right in the comfort of your own home. However, there is a right way and wrong way to do it, so we’re here to tell you all the right ways to master the perfect staycation. Who knows, it may become an annual tradition.

It starts with a plan

The first thing you need to do is look at your calendar. If you can only squeeze in a weekend, that’s fine too, as long as there’s nothing you’re committed to. Simply book it, in pen, as a fixed, confirmed date. Now for the fun part – the plan! Whether it’s a solo, couples or family staycation, it’s important to have a theme or goal. For example, is it all about relaxing and finding your Zen, or maybe it’s about letting loose and having fun…or perhaps a little of both. Make a list of the top activities, movies, food suggestions and pencil those in for each day so you have a starting point. Like any good vacation, it can’t be too tightly structured. Leading up to your staycation, you’ll need to do a fairly thorough house cleaning or hire someone to do it for you. A mound of dishes, laundry and other neglected chores will certainly dampen your relaxed vibes. Taking a bit of time to de-stress your home will work wonders for a true staycation enjoyment.

Go shopping

Unlike a destination vacation where you have to worry about travel insurance, foreign currency, airport parking, flight delays, baggage claims and so on, a staycation involves just a small amount of planning and shopping, and none of the other vacation-related hassles. Because you’re saving money by not going away, it’s OK to budget for a little ‘fun’ spending. Splurge on your favourite food and wines (or try the ones you’ve always wanted) and load up on treats such candles, bath bombs and flowers. If there are a few extra touches you’d like for around the home such as new bedsheets, a cozy rug or those curtains you’ve been eyeing, go for it. It will help give your home that special ‘getaway’ vibe. If you have kids, stock up on snacks, baking supplies, games and other fun things you can all enjoy.

Now for the fun

Still not quite sure where to start or what your staycation will look like? Here are some top tips to help you regroup, recharge and relax:

1) Turn on the music!

Make a playlist of music you love, and be sure to sing, dance, and enjoy. Better yet, bring out those old records, CDs or tapes you’ve got packed away and take a trip down memory lane.

2) Turn off your devices.

This is difficult for many people, but it’s essential for the full ‘vacay’ experience. You can set aside a brief, scheduled time to check phone messages, texts and email each day but only reply to emergencies. Let people know you’re ‘unavailable’ and that you’ll get back to them upon your return. Be sure to limit social media, the nightly news, and anything else that feels like the ‘daily grind’.

3) Get decadent…or at least get fancy.

Pull out that wedding china you never use, your linen tablecloths, those guest towels…and treat your home like the 5-star resort it is. Order in a sumptuous meal from a new restaurant and fire up that blender for a wild cocktail; it’s all up to you. If you want your staycation more like a spa retreat, hire a massage therapist or aesthetician who does home visits.

4) Get silly.

Make your staycation memorable by doing something fun and out of the ordinary. Make a blanket fort the length of your living room, sing karaoke, roast marshmallows in your fireplace, or anything that reduces stress and fills you and your home with joy.

5) Explore.

If you don’t want to hibernate at home for all of your staycation, it’s always fun to take a tour of your town from a tourist’s perspective. Go to that art gallery, museum, or ice cream shop, and be sure to hit that bakery everyone’s been talking about. Try a new outdoor activity or check out what’s going on at the rec centre or library. You’ll be surprised just how much there is to do.

6) Rest.

Sleep in, meditate, nap, and kick back with good books, podcasts and movies. If you’re the creative type, pick up that pen, paintbrush or instrument and see what inspires you. Just be sure to unwind.

Whether your staycation is packed with fun activities or it’s a calm, quiet retreat from the real world, what matters most is that you’ve created lasting memories and enjoyed time with yourself, your family and your home. When you head back to the real world, you’ll be fully recharged, with your staycation to thank for it.
