Want to decrease the stress, mess, and work that often accompanies planning and executing a holiday party this year? A holiday open house is the answer. No… not that kind of open house! (although we also have some great tips for hosting a killer open house in the winter that will wow potential buyers). Instead, we’re talking about a holiday open house in which you ‘open your house’ to friends and family to drop by and celebrate the festive season. To make it a holiday open house to remember you’ll want to keep these tips in mind:
Keep It Casual
A holiday open house is a lot less formal than a holiday party. Although you’ll want to ensure that your home is ‘guest-ready’ (i.e. fresh towels in the guest bathroom and no dust bunnies), overall there’s less setup required.
As far as decorations go, minimalism seems to be quite the decorating trend. A few classic wreaths on your front door, some greenery inside, including a tree, if you choose, and a dash of sparkle will go a long way.
To further set the mood, a roaring fire in the fireplace and seasonal scents wafting through the air are a great idea. Candles also help to impart a festive glow; however, in order to keep it safe, you may want to opt for battery operated flameless candles instead.
Plan for Flexibility
When planning your holiday open house, flexibility is key. Remember that guests will be coming and going throughout the time period you’ve allotted, so you’ll need to relax and go with the flow.
To help you ‘go with the flow’, it’s a good idea to provide a variety of food and drink options for guests that are simple and elegant. Keeping foods finger-friendly will make preparation a lot easier and allow your guests to mingle with ease. You may also want to set up multiple food stations to provide your guests with various tasty treats. You could keep it even simpler by asking your guests to bring their favourite appetizer to share, as that not only ensures they’ll have something they like to eat while also leaving you less to prep and less to splurge for.
For beverages, you can never go wrong by offering good, hot coffee to your guests on a cold winter day. Apple cider is another great choice and the smell is amazing. For something a little stronger, offer a glass of champagne or a signature seasonal cocktail.
Remember that, as the party host, you are responsible for keeping your guests safe. Before your guests arrive, ensure that your walkways and driveway are clear of the snow and ice that could cause a nasty spill. It’s also a good idea to have the number of a taxi close to the door in case they’ve made the event a little too merry.
